About the Institute
Back Pain + Proven Solutions = The Spine Institute
For years physicians and therapists treated back pain with a variety of options, from comfort treatments like hot packs and bed rest to traction and even surgery. Sometimes they worked. Sometimes they didn't.
Now, research indicates that many of the therapies used in the past simply are not effective. Yet, many are still used today.
The Spine Institute has been developed to offer evidence-based care of back problems, in other words, only treatment and therapy that have been proven to work.
A joint effort of Willis-Knighton Health System and LSU Health Sciences Center , it incorporates physicians from neurosurgery, orthopedics, physical medicine, occupational medicine, rheumatology with physical therapists and a full complement of support staff.

What It Means to You
Patients - You will receive only the treatments and therapies that have been proven to work. You will have your best chance to get well without surgery unless absolutely necessary.
Businesses - Your employees will receive proven treatments and therapies and will not go into an endless loop of appointment after appointment without results. The goal is to regain their ability, not focus on disability.
Doctors - You have a place to refer your patients that relies on clinical research. You can manage your patient or ask for the support of our medical director, Dr. Donald Smith, or any member of our faculty.
